The MVPHE armchair is an ode by Piet Hein Eek to his friend and designer Martin Visser. The name of the design is a reference to the initials of both. In 2020 this quirky armchair with round shapes could be admired for the first time in the Centraal Museum Utrecht as part of Tribute to Visser.
At first glance, the compact and voluptuous design of the MVPHE does not suggest that it is inspired by Visser’s form-follows-function design principle. Yet the starting point of Piet Hein Eek, the SZ 73 armchair from 1968, is clearly reflected in his design. Piet Hein Eek: “When I saw the SZ 73, I immediately knew that that was the one for me. I could make an archetypical “late” Martin Visser with it. I took the way the armrests are attached to the wooden frame as a starting point, but I enlarged several elements. In that way, I transformed a 1968 model into my design style. ”
The frame of the armchair is finished with beech veneer. The armchair is upholstered in the woolen fabric Tonus from Kvadrat and you can choose from three colors: Tonus 131 (moss green), Tonus 129 (bright blue) and Tonus 615 (anthracite).
