Press Room Chair

$0.00

The Press Room Chair is the low version of a series of three chairs, that Rietveld designed for the Press Room of the UNESCO building in Paris. The chair was meant as a comfortable lounge chairfor the low reading table for the journalists. Due to budget limitations, the new chair was never produced and Rietveld was obliged to replace them by chairs he designed earlier that year for the World Exhibition in Brussels.

Thankfully though, the original design drawings and scale models were preserved, so that the chair could be built exactly as Rietveld had envisioned it. The only change in comparison with the 1958 design, is that the swivel base is 6 cm heigher, because of which the Press Room Chair meets all of todays demands with regard to seating comfort and ergonomics.

The comfortable lounge chair is available in an upholstered and a leather version. The unique finishing of the seams accentuates the chair's robust forms and spatial articulation, which is also reflected in the broad armrests of solid wood.
These armrest are produced in solid oak, black or whitewash stained, and finished with a matt transparent lacquer. Also a version in solid American Walnut is available.
The asymmetrical cross foot is available in black structured powdercoat or stainless steel and is characterized by a beautiful saddle leather strap which functions as a foot glider.

Nice little detail is the poem of poet Morgenstern on the bottom of each Press Room Chair. Rietveld sometimes printed it underneath his designs. The poem reflects his opinion that a chair was not meant to rest, so it didn't need the comfort of a bed. This chair however proves it's perfect for your rest!
